EP no. 1
1. Tender Kisses
2. It’s That Song
3. Summer Again
‘Tender Kisses’ is not the most convincing of openers. The vocals sound a bit off key and the lyrical content is undermined in parts because the singing’s a bit clumsy. The subject matter perhaps doesn’t interest the listener enough and the chord sequences and general instrumentation do not prove imaginative enough to make up for it. That said it would be good to hear it reworked or find out whether it possesses more of a spark played live.
‘It’s That Song’ packs a more direct audio punch. A homage to what’s great about a decent ‘choon’, it’s essentially a catchy ditty with some endearingly loopy guitar soloing serving as an extra bonus.
Track 3 ‘Summer Again’ hits the raw nerve missed by the first track. A nicely stripped down beginning lends the song the immediate intimacy it needs and the track builds well with its initial sparseness gradually giving way to a fuller, louder section before dropping back into a quiet outro. There’s shades of (dare I mention the word?) ‘Britpop’ on this demo but thankfully more in the vein of Pulp and Blur than Menswear – I look forward to seeing how things progress for the good old ‘US’!
