Risk!!

Could this be the greatest board game ever? I think so. It's a healthy outlet for everyone's inner megalomaniac and a chance to live the dream of taking over the world. It can also be modified slightly and used as a drinking game or made to reflect current events to the extent that we all started to feel a bit guilty...

Last night, I almost achieved a tactical victory that would have made me finally worthy of the title of Obergruppenfuhrer that Eddie the Gent bestowed upon me for deeds which are still classified. I was playing as America, having ousted my flatmate from Alaska (and she deserved it, having chosen to play as the lilac/mauve army. I mean, really) and I was leading a sort of pincer movement into South America and Europe. Eerily like real life...and then my one potential ally went to bed stoned and I suffered an ignoble defeat when my other two flatmates went all mushy, it being Valentine's night and all, and decided to collaborate to defeat me. Bastards. A sort of Axis of black pieces formed across Europe and I was forced back into Greenland by a corresponding offensive from Kamchatka (is tht still a real place?).

So the moral of the story is - love and war when taken together can really smeg up your plans. Also - never judge someone by their colour. Lilac is as strong and manly as any other piece...evidently. Maybe the real America will suffer a similar defeat and the world will be saved. Imagine George Bush exiled to Greenland! My onmly defence for my actions is that Pablo made me do it.

Kamchatka

Is indeed a real place. I don't know where it is or what it's like, but I've always loved the name. I never want to look up where it is and certainly I never want to go there. I know what it's like in my mind and, apart from a vague idea of its latitude that I have (near the Arctic Circle; couldn't say why), it doesn't have to be anywhere specific. It's a sort of portable ideal - a mythical place for me filled with everything I find intriguing, like Canibals and forged Old Masters and War Criminals and unhinged anthropologists and crumbly hotels and flooded rivers and crocodiles and pirates and bears and possibly even a roc, that any knowledge of the real Kamchatka would be bound to spoil.

But it is real.

Oh yes.
