Itch, Immune and Vessels - Brudenell Social Club, 24th Feb

Itch
This fantastically dynamic four piece have but one gimmick, a Helmet, with simply “trademark” written on it. I found this very fitting. Complex and intricate songs with shifting beat and rhythms hint at a professionalism behind the group and their music history. Itch seem to have the perfect name, they seem to just have the itch for good tunes, reminiscent of Modest Mouse, hints of alternative rock of the ninety, Pavement with the impulsive rests and pauses of Queens of the Stone Age and other Rocks greats. Not so much a band than four musician playing together in a coordinated unison. See Itch Now.

Immune
One of those bands you spend the first half trying to like, trying to find a way in, and then second half resigned to fact that you don’t, and will have sit through it. With some great electronic sounds the problem with Immune is there is nothing very interesting in its melodic plods, add to that, the vocalist at times sounds uncannily like Robbie Williams, not his fault I suppose, and you’re in for a bemusing half hour. Immune need something significantly more; a female, sporadic vocal style, maybe a more frantic drumming anything to add some life to what is in some ways is a very interesting mixture of living noises spliced together but like Frankenstein’s monster, is only the imitation of life.

Vessels,
Born of such great musical heritage and continuing to leave the old behind and move further into their own distinctive direction, and despite defective equipment, Vessels proceed to blast life into the show once more. Problem with Vessels is they have so quickly moved to headline spots that other than knowing they are bloody good, and rock in a way many fail to manage; too much Guinness has always been consumed and the details are a vague and blurry idea that I remember being very taken by, but could spell out again and if it were not that others were there with me I might think it had just been a fantastic dream.
